*Abstract
Recent studies from our laboratory demonstrated that chitinase-like protein proteins such as breast regression protein 39 (BRP-39) or YKL-40 (human homolog of BRP-39) may play an important role in the development of COPD. In the animal model of cigarette-smoke(CS)-induced emphysema, the null mutation of BRP-39 significantly enhanced emphysematous alveolar destruction. In humans, smokers with COPD showed exaggerated expression of YKL-40 both in the lungs and serum. Further mechanistic studies revealed that the numbers of apoptotic cells were significantly increased in the lungs of BRP-39 null mice compared to wild type controls. These studies demonstrate that BRP-39, a chitinase-like protein, plays an important role in CS-induced tissue injury response. In this talk, I will overview evolving concepts of COPD pathogenesis and share our recent data demonstrating novel regulatory role of BRP-39 in the development of COPD and acute hyperoxygen-induced lung injury.
