▶Abctract: Resilience plays a critical role in determining whether stress can induce depression. Although mGluR5 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression, the links between mGluR5 activation and resilience has not been explored yet. In this study, we found that mGluR5-/- mice show depression-like behaviors and lentiviral-mediated gene transfer of mGluR5 in the nucleus accumbens rescue the depression-like behaviors. mGluR5 mediates the induction of deltaFosB, a resilience molecule of which protein expression increase in response to chronic stress. These data suggest that mGluR5 is a resilience factor that enhances resilience in animal models of depression. The importance of relevant animal models in psychiatric research will be discussed.
