▶Subject: My Key Inventions for Commercial Agricultural Product Development and Genome Editing Research at the IGI Plant Genomics and Transformation Facility
▶Speaker: Myeong-Je Cho, Ph.D. (Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) University of California-Berkeley)
▶Date: 3:00PM/Apr. 5(Fri.)/2019
▶Place: Auditorium(1F), Postech Biotech Center
I am currently the Director and Principal Investigator (PI) at the Plant Genomics and Transformation Facility (PGTF) of the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI). Previously I invented some successful patents for commercial product development. I developed green regenerative tissue technology to reduce genotype limitation in transformation of monocot crop species at the University of California, Berkeley. This protocol was applied to establish/improve transformation in maize, wheat, sorghum, and sugarcane, etc. in industry. We also developed a plant gene expression system, called ExpressTec, for increased protein expression using endosperm-specific promoters with their signal peptide sequences. This technology is currently being utilized in industry to produce pharmaceutical proteins such as recombinant human lactoferrin, lysozyme, albumin, transferrin, etc. in rice. The IGI at the University of California, Berkeley originally began as the Innovative Genomics Initiative in 2014 and officially re-launched in January, 2017. The Institute’s research efforts are focused on five key CRISPR-related areas: (1) biomedicine, (2) agriculture, (3) microbiology, (4) technology and (5) society. In order to facilitate progress in agricultural research, IGI launched the PGTF in November, 2016. The mission of the PGTF is to (1) establish and develop enabling technologies for CRISPR/Cas9 applications in target crop species, (2) generate genome-edited events in major crop species, (3) collaborate with other PIs/researchers and (4) perform research on seed quality improvement via genome editing. Here I will present some key updates on the PGTF research..
